About Cheyenne Regional Medical Center

Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, located at 2600 E. 18th St., Cheyenne, WY 82001, is a 222-bed tertiary hospital offering a Level 3 trauma center. The center has 245 providers and offers 39 different services, according to their site, including:

  • Acute Rehabilitation
  • Aging Services
  • Cardiac Services
  • Emergency Services
  • General Surgery
  • Home Health Care Services
  • Radiology
  • Neurology
  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Rheumatology Services
  • Primary Care
  • Women and Children’s Services.

However, despite its numerous services and vast infrastructure, the hospital has an average Google review of 2.7. Additionally, according to the Wyoming Tribune Eagle, the center lost its “deemed status” in 2017. Also, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center was involved in a recent data breach that may have exposed Medicare beneficiaries to unauthorized claims.

Attorney Sean Olson remarked:

“Recent news reports highlighting the departure of multiple physicians from Cheyenne Regional Medical Center due to chronic staffing shortages and systemic issues are deeply concerning—but sadly, not surprising.

At Olson Personal Injury Lawyers, we represent patients and families across Wyoming who have suffered devastating harm as a result of substandard medical care at CRMC. These public revelations echo what we have seen repeatedly in our work: that a lack of adequate staffing and oversight has real, often tragic, consequences for patient safety.

When doctors speak out—or leave altogether—it is a warning sign that the system is under stress and patients may be at risk. Every Wyoming resident deserves competent, timely medical care. Hospitals have a duty to ensure that their systems are safe, their staff are supported, and their patients are protected. When they fail in that duty, the consequences can be life-altering.

Until the issues at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center are fixed, we will continue to hold the hospital accountable and fight for the rights of those who have been harmed.”

History of Medical Malpractice Cases Against CRMC

Cheyenne Regional Medical Center has been involved in multiple public lawsuits. While we detail multiple cases below, these are only some that have been identified—other ongoing lawsuits may be in the works or undisclosed.

March 2022 – Monica Stefanowicz initiated a medical malpractice lawsuit against CRMC and related health care professionals, claiming negligence that resulted in wrongful death. The case is ongoing in the U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming.

November 2016 – The family of 15-month-old Oliver Scully filed a lawsuit against Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, alleging that the hospital’s negligence led to the child’s death from a severe internal infection caused by bacterial pneumonia in November 2016. The suit claims that despite being brought to the hospital the night before his death, Oliver was never seen by a doctor and the family was told to go home due to an expected eight-hour wait. The lawsuit argued that the hospital failed to provide an adequate medical screening, which could have identified and treated the life-threatening condition.

March 2016 – A wrongful death lawsuit was filed after 16-year-old Isaac Salas died following treatment at CRMC. After being admitted for catheter issues, he underwent surgery and was discharged. His mother contended that the pain medication administered caused fluid buildup in his lungs, which ultimately led to his death, and that he should not have been released due to breathing difficulties.

October 2015 – Janice L. Ross filed a wrongful death and medical negligence lawsuit against Cheyenne Regional Medical Center and Dr. David G. Silver, alleging their actions led to her husband Dale Ross’ death in 2015. The suit claims Dr. Silver left a pericardial drain in Dale’s heart following bypass surgery, causing infection and fluid buildup that went untreated, and that both the doctor and hospital failed to properly diagnose and respond to his deteriorating condition. Despite clear signs of cardiac distress, surgery was delayed, and Dale died shortly after being placed under anesthesia while in a medically unstable state.

May 2013 – Mr. Nobles, a Washington resident, became critically ill while traveling and was hospitalized at Rawlins and later Cheyenne hospitals in Wyoming in December 2007. While in the ICU, he developed a right shoulder injury due to what he reported as improper handling during movement, leading to pain and limited arm function. Despite various medical tests and therapies, he was diagnosed with a brachial plexus injury and discharged in March 2008. Mr. Nobles filed a medical negligence lawsuit against Cheyenne Regional Medical Center in 2010, claiming the hospital’s staff caused the injury by mishandling him, but the court granted summary judgment in favor of the hospital, citing a statute of limitations issue.

A recent article from the Cowboy State Daily reports how doctors are leaving CRMC due to serious ethical concerns and dangerous staffing shortages. Dr. Steven Beer, a neurosurgeon at the hospital, says that when these issues were raised, they were either ignored or met with retaliation. He pointed to overworked and burned-out staff, the use of unqualified personnel, and broken financial promises—all of which he says put patient safety at risk. Despite a medical staff vote of “no confidence” in CEO Tim Thornell, CRMC Board of Trustees President Pete Obermueller dismissed the concerns as coming from a “vocal minority” and said most staff support Thornell. However, a staff resolution claims Thornell has fostered a culture of fear, intimidation, and unaccountability, with no meaningful action to resolve ongoing systemic problems.

What to Expect When Filing a Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Against CRMC

It is essential to stay informed throughout the process of filing a medical malpractice lawsuit against Cheyenne Regional Medical Center or another hospital. In Wyoming, there are specific steps to be aware of that will impact your ability to recover compensation.

  • Free Case Evaluation: During an initial meeting with our team, we will discuss the details of your case and determine whether a medical malpractice claim is viable.
  • Evidence Gathering: Once a case is established, we will collect proof of medical malpractice. This can include interviewing witnesses, collecting medical reports, and consulting experts in the field.
  • Expert Witness Analysis: In Wyoming, expert testimony is typically needed to establish a medical malpractice claim. The expert must be qualified to speak on the specific medical issues in question and the treatment involved.
  • Filing Your Case: Once our attorneys collect crucial evidence and obtain an expert analysis, we will file a formal complaint in the correct Wyoming court. The statute of limitations, with some exceptions, puts a two-year deadline on filing. Our team can ensure your claim is filed on time in accordance with the correct statute.
  • Negotiating with Hospital/Insurance: You may be able to settle the case outside of court with the at-fault party. This includes negotiations with the hospital’s legal team for a fair settlement agreement. Our medical malpractice attorneys in Cheyenne can take on this task for you.
  • Going to Trial if a Fair Settlement is Not Reached: If we cannot reach a fair settlement, we will take your case to trial. Both sides will present evidence and witnesses to argue before a judge or jury during this time. Our attorneys can handle this entire process on your behalf so you can focus on recovery.

How Long Do I Have to File a Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Against a Hospital in Cheyenne?

In Wyoming, injured parties have two years to file a medical malpractice lawsuit. This deadline differs from the four years afforded to other types of personal injury cases in the state. However, this statute may extend to those who discover their injury after the initial surgery or procedure that caused it. The limited periods to file mean it is crucial to work with an attorney who can help collect evidence and witness testimony in a timely manner.
